History
In 1843 Frances Warde, one of the first Sisters of Mercy professed by Catherine McAuley, established in Pittsburgh, Pa., the first of many foundations in the United States. From Pittsburgh, she arrived in Providence, R.I., in 1851 with four sisters, establishing the first permanent convent in New England. From this foundation in Providence, Frances then established foundations in Connecticut (1852), New Hampshire (1858), Maine (1865), and Vermont (1874). The Albany, NY foundation was established in 1863 by Sister Mary Vincent Sweetman and three other sisters from St Catherine’s Convent in New York City.
