Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Laud SCOTUS Decision on DACA

June 18, 2020

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas laud the Supreme Court’s decision rejecting the president’s effort to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, ruling 5-4 that the administration’s rescission of the program was “arbitrary and capricious.”
At a time full of much uncertainty, we must rejoice in this decision as a victory for justice and humanity. Young people brought to the United States know no other home. Many have pursued educational and vocational goals and are now making significant contributions to their communities.
While we understand that this decision does not grant full protections for individuals with DACA status, it does affirm what we the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas have believed in our hearts all along. These young immigrants are our neighbors, they share our pews, they are in our high schools and universities and they are here to stay!
However, we must not stop here as the struggle for full protection for DACA recipients is far from over.
We need legislative action that will provide a permanent solution and give DACA recipients the peace of mind they deserve. As a faith-based group committed to standing in solidarity with our migrant sisters and brothers, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas pledge to work for legislation that recognizes DACA recipients’ deep ties to the United States and fosters their full development as valued members of their communities.
